About the film

A film-song by Cyrus Sundar Singh: Gently to Nagasaki is a short-film about war, remembrance and forgiveness. In her essay, Gently to Nagasaki, author Joy Kogawa reflects on the significance of the dates August 6th and 9th from her novel Obasan, published in 1981. Thirty years later, Kogawa learns the following lesson: “Every enemy is a beloved friend.” Remembrance Day ceremonies, Kogawa’s essay, five teenagers’ perspective on remembrance, and the song, Island in the Sun, is used to construct a multi-layered film-song with a counter melody similar to Scarborough Fair, by Simon and Garfunkel.

Thank you

The network expresses a sincere thank you to Pastor Emeritus Ralph Carl Wushke, congregational council chairperson David Berg, and the Church Council of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church for use of their space for hosting our event.

The church’s vision of "building a diverse, accessible, justice-seeking, welcoming, engaged community in a complex downtown neighbourhood" is an inspired fit for our programming.
